Overview of the San Diego River

Picture of the San Diego River

"At Santee, the San Diego River is at its urban best."
Peter Rowe, San Diego Union Tribune Staff Writer

The City of Santee is host to the San Diego River as it flows west from Julian towards the Pacific Ocean. The River offers tremendous biological resources within its reach through Santee and beyond, supporting a diverse population of plant and animal life. The health of the San Diego River is directly dependant on the actions of all Santee residents, and deserving of our protection!

Mast Park, Town Center Community Park, Woodglen Vista Park, and the trail along Forester Creek, are all situated adjacent to the San Diego River or its tributaries. Enabling people to enjoy these resources provides a sense of place and connection with their environment. The City of Santee collaborates with local community groups, such as the San Diego River Park Foundation (http://www.sandiegoriver.org/) which encourage stewardship of our natural resources.

The City of Santee also provides opportunities to volunteer groups who wish to help protect our river. These opportunities include storm drain stenciling projects and trash removal events. The Roadside Pride Program provides an opportunity for Santee-based groups to raise money in exchange for trash removal.

Contact Helen Perry, our Stormwater Program Manager (619) 258-4100 x177 for further information on volunteer opportunities.
